The Director of Data is responsible for leading and scaling our data team across data engineering, analytics engineering, and data science. This technical leadership role reports to the CTO and partners closely with our Data Strategy Manager to ensure alignment between business needs and technical implementation. The focus is on building robust data systems, developing engineering talent, and driving operational excellence. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in the realm of data, proven experience leading technical teams, and the ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

What you'll do:

    • Technical Leadership
    • Drive technical strategy and architecture for data platforms, infrastructure, and tooling
    • Establish best practices, governance frameworks, and quality standards 
    • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and approaches to improve data capabilities
    • Partner with Data Strategy Manager to translate business requirements into technical solutions
    • Ensure data security, compliance, and privacy standards are maintained
    • Evaluate, implement and drive adoption of new data tools and technologies
    • Develop comprehensive training programs and documentation to enable self-service data access
    • Create educational resources and technical guidance for cross-functional partners
    • Team Leadership & Development  
    • Attract and build a high-performing team through strategic hiring and talent development
    • Foster a culture of excellence through innovation, adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning
    • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers, analytics engineers, data scientists, and analysts through effective coaching and career development, with a keen attention to quality and consistency with best practices
    • Partner with Data Strategy Manager to align team capabilities with business priorities
    • Operational Excellence
    • Oversee design, implementation, and maintenance of data architecture and infrastructure
    • Drive efficiency and reliability improvements in data pipelines and systems
    • Implement processes for monitoring, alerting, and incident management
    • Manage technical debt and system scalability
    • Ensure successful delivery of technical initiatives on time and with high quality
    • In partnership with the Data Strategy Manager, design and execute technical roadmaps that balance quick wins with long-term scalability
    • Establish metrics and KPIs to measure effectiveness of self-service data initiatives
    • Build frameworks for tracking tool adoption and usage across the organization

What you should have:

    • 12+ years of data engineering experience with 4+ years leading engineering teams
    • Deep expertise in analytics engineering, data science, data infrastructure, data pipelines, and data warehousing
    • Strong background in cloud technologies (AWS/GCP/Azure)
    • Experience with modern data tools (Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, etc.)
    • Experience with modern BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Mixpanel, etc.)
    • Track record of building and scaling engineering teams
    • Track record of measurable business impact
    • Experience implementing engineering best practices and governance
    • Proven track record implementing tech stack tooling and driving best practices, including self-service analytics tools
    • Experience creating and overseeing the development of technical and training documentation
    • Strong project management skills with focus on roadmap execution
    • Experience in high growth, SaaS/B2B environments
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

    • Experience with agile development practices
    • Advanced degree in relevant field
$201,000 - $301,400 a year
The pay range for this position is $201,000 to $301,400  for all U.S. locations. This range reflects the minimum and maximum amounts we believe in good faith, at the time of this posting, are appropriate for this role. Actual compensation may vary, subject to future adjustment as needed. Articulate considers a wide range of factors in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs. This position is also bonus eligible.
