For this exciting opportunity we are seeking a highly-engaged leader to play an important role in leading through deep knowledge a globally distributed team of engineers to develop and maintain security in Ubuntu. The successful candidate will be mindful of the dynamics of the security community and equally aware of the business needs of Canonical. Your primary role is to provide leadership to the Security team, engage with stakeholders throughout the company in planning and prioritizing work and remove impediments for fulfilling team responsibilities and initiatives. Key parts of this role are to advocate for secure designs and implementations for projects throughout the organization while keeping team members focused on the most important tasks at hand. In addition, the Ubuntu Security Manager will be the public face of Security at Canonical, working with partners and the community to promote the work the team does. Excellent communication and relationship skills are paramount to the role as the successful candidate will be responsible for coordination between internal teams and external partners.

This position is home based or in one of our global offices with occasional travel, sometimes internationally, to engineering sprints or customer engagements, usually for one week at a time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Ubuntu Security team Technical Lead to manage plans and schedules for security updates and issue tracking, testing, feature development, design reviews, audits and research
  • Work with internal stakeholders on coordinating security updates in key software as well as security feature planning for the Ubuntu project, ensuring that dependencies are properly handled and realistic deadlines are set
  • Participate in architectural designs with Technical Architects as they pertain to security in Ubuntu
  • Perform and/or participate in design reviews for security-sensitive initiatives as required
  • Work with other team leaders to participate in qualification of new business opportunities as they pertain to security in Ubuntu
  • Maintain a good working relationship with Ubuntu community developers and the free software community in general (including other distributions and upstream projects) to coordinate vulnerability research and fixes
  • Be the spokesperson for Ubuntu security and the team point of contact internally and externally
  • Manage a diverse, fast-moving, distributed technical team, including task assignment, feedback on progress and yearly reviews
  • When necessary, respond to and work to resolve issues raised by end users and commercial support customers
  • Lead and participate in regular development meetings involving domestic and international travel
  • Be the public face of Security at Canonical, producing content such as whitepapers, blog posts, and social media campaigns to promote and advocate work the team is doing.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong managerial skills, including the ability to coordinate a team to provide high quality security updates and deliver several parallel projects according to strict deadlines
  • Excellent communications skills in the English language, both verbal and written, especially in email, IRC, video conferencing and other online venues
  • Proven track record in project management and line management of small-to-medium-sized teams at a global level
  • History of participating in secure architectural designs
  • Ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of people (both technical and non-technical), multi-tasking when necessary
  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self motivation, delivering according to a schedule, and to motivate and mentor others to do the same
  • A detail-oriented, thorough and quality-focused working style
  • Familiarity with responsible (coordinated) disclosure practices
  • Ability to collaborate in real time with others in European, North American, and Asian time zones

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Extensive experience of the Linux and free software world as well as solid knowledge of relevant industry trends, especially pertaining to security
  • 5+ years security experience, open source security experience preferred
  • A thorough understanding of the common categories of security vulnerabilities and techniques for fixing them
  • Familiarity with automated regression testing principles for promoting high-quality updates and features
  • An interest in publicizing the Security team's work through blog posts, social media , whitepapers and other outlets
