Sr. Backend Engineer, Package (Ruby on Rails) Worldwide

Company: GitLab

The GitLab DevOps platform empowers 100,000+ organizations to deliver software faster and more efficiently. We are one of the world’s largest all-remote companies with 2,000+ team members and values that guide a culture where people embrace the belief that everyone can contribute.

It's an exciting time to join GitLab.

GitLab is looking for a Rails Senior Backend Engineer for the Package Stage. This position is 100% remote.

Your expertise shapes our DevOps product

At GitLab, developers are independent and self-organized individual contributors who work together as a tight team in a remote and agile way. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll work on all aspects of GitLab, building features, fixing bugs, and shaping the future of the CI/CD tools.  This includes both the open source version of GitLab, the enterprise editions, and the service as well. Hundreds of thousands of developers depend on GitLab every day to get their jobs done.

Why join Package?

The Package group has a very unique setup that provides the opportunity to maintain core features of the product with newer and exciting areas. We focus on package management to be the single source of truth for storing and distributing dependencies for every GitLab customer. While we are a self-sufficient and autonomous team, we assume a cross-cutting role and regularly work with product teams across all of GitLab, which makes our work highly diverse and never boring.

As the team continues over time, there will be a lot of opportunities to contribute to high-impact work, like performance improvements, scalability challenges, bug fixes, and increasing security.

What you’ll do

Every day is different in the Package stage! One day you'll be developing support for a new package format, the next you'll be finding a way to scale a feature to manage millions of requests per minute. The work goes beyond just building a package registry - you're building cutting edge features that tie package management back into the rest of GitLab through features like CI/CD and storage management.

You'll do much more than just write code. You'll break up your day by reviewing code for other GitLab Engineers and open source contributors, fielding questions from users, participating in engineering-wide discussions and initiatives and of course, planning the future work and vision for the Package stage. What else?

What you’ll need

  • Significant professional experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems.
  • Experience owning a project from concept to production, including proposal, discussion, and execution.
  • Self-motivated and self-managing, with strong organizational skills.
  • Share our values, and work following those values.

You'll stand out if you bring

  • Demonstrated experience with any package management tools such as NPM, Maven, or Debian.
  • Experience with GraphQL.
  • Experience in large production environments and in scaling SaaS products.

We know it's tough, but please try to avoid the confidence gap. You don't have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role.

  • Family & Friends day off every month
