Job Summary

Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu, the fastest growing, and most widely used Linux distribution to date. The project’s aim is to reduce barriers to innovation globally by providing free access to an open technology platform.

The Cloud DevOps division of Canonical produces a suite of Ubuntu-based products for configuring, deploying, and maintaining cloud infrastructure across all major clouds (public and private). Field Engineering then takes these products and deploys them on-site for a wide range of enterprise customers. The Solutions QA team, as part of Field Engineering, is responsible for the quality of those products once they are integrated together and configured as they would be for production deployments. This includes product interactions, deployment environments, and end-to-end workloads.

As an Engineer in Solutions QA, your responsibilities will include developing and implementing automation for deploying Canonical’s Cloud products, new tests, testing strategies, and process improvements that directly impact the success or our enterprise cloud deployments.

This is a work from home opportunity. Anywhere in the United States or Western Europe.

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
  • Deploy, manage, and debug highly distributed systems
  • Develop and implement automated test suites/CI infrastructure
  • Develop re-usable tools for deploying Canonical’s cloud products
  • Execute, monitor, and report on existing testing efforts
  • Create new testing infrastructure, process and strategies
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding solutions
  • Triage test runs to identify cause of failure
  • Identify, isolate, and document bugs clearly and concisely


Required skills and experience

  • Degree level education, preferably in a technology field
  • Solid background in modern QA process and strategies
  • Minimum of 5 years programming/scripting in support of QA
  • Solid understanding of Linux system architecture
  • Expertise in Python and Shell scripting
  • Background in coding API interactions
  • Experience with continuous integration tool such as Jenkins
  • Knowledge of networking technologies and fundamentals
  • Experience with cloud topologies and technologies
  • Experience with database technology
  • Strong communication and cooperation skills
  • Understanding of how to be part of a distributed team
  • Willingness and ability to travel both domestically and abroad
  • Involvement in open source projects in the past

Preferred skills and experience

  • Proficient devops methodology and process
  • Experience deploying services with Juju
  • Experience with Metal as a Service
  • Using and deploying OpenStack
  • Experience with Debian packaging
  • Experience developing web applications using JavaScript.
