Senior Web Developer Remote (US, UK, Canada or Netherlands) /

Company: 1Password

Over 100,000 businesses and millions of people use 1Password to protect their most important information. We’re a kind, curious, and customer-focused team on a mission to build the world's most-loved password manager and give people more control over their data.

Our team exists to make developers' daily lives safer and easier. We build tools & integrations that enable thousands of developers and companies to write and deploy safer software to production with less friction. So everything a developer uses from 1Password in their terminal, IDE, CI/CD pipeline, or server infrastructure, we create. And that's where you come in.

A big part of the developer experience is providing useful and discoverable documentation. That's where you come in. You'll be working on this project first and then transition later into other parts of the website. We treat documentation as a product, so we want you to make this an amazing experience. From the tiniest feature that delivers a moment of delight to the big content framework, you get to build and own it end-to-end. You'll also work closely with design and content on this project.

This is a Remote opportunity within Canada, the US, the UK and the Netherlands.

What we're looking for:

    • A great understanding of developing for the web. Naturally, we expect semantic HTML markup and team-friendly, reusable Sass.
    • A good understanding of JavaScript libraries and frameworks, including React and TypeScript, but you should also be comfortable writing non-framework reliant JavaScript.
    • A great understanding of developing websites using static site generators and markdown based pages. Hugo experience is a plus! Experience with Contentful CMS is a plus too but not required.
    • Experience building and deploying static sites with tools like Docker, Terraform and AWS. You should also be comfortable setting up a CI/CD pipeline to deploy your website. Knowledge of GitLab CI will come in handy.
    • A deep understanding of modern browser security policies and content security.
    • Proficiency with cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them.
    • Linting tools and methods to check content quality are no-brainers for you.
    • Capable of running point on a project from initial planning, to design, development and through to support.
    • Someone who’s comfortable offering feedback to other developers on the team and experienced in reviewing and improving code.
    • A self-starter who can run point on a project from start to finish, creating a wholly new experience/product that wasn’t there before.

What you can expect in month 1: Onboarding onto the project

    • Familiarize yourself with the bare bones project that is already there. Shouldn’t take too long.
    • Implement a small feature or improvement on the project.
    • You’ll work with other devs on our team for code reviews etc.
    • Learn more about our team, our customers and the products we build.

What you can expect in month 3: Ownership of the project

    • Fully drive the docs project, taking ownership for building out and making it better and planning for future development.
    • Act as a development resource to others in the organization that need changes to the docs portal, taking requests, planning and implementing solutions.
    • Onboard yourself on other parts of the website codebase and begin to take part in the development process there, picking up smaller issues.
    • Assist in identifying inefficiencies in our development and deployment processes, and contribute to improvements already planned.
    • Get in the head of the developers that are using your doc portal and understand their needs and wants so you can better shape the product to serve them.

What you can expect in month 6: Expansion of the project and expanding into other areas of development

    • Build out the docs portal team by onboarding others onto the project. We don’t want to create an island where it’s just you and your pal Wilson!
    • Start operating as a key part of the web team, taking ownership of areas that interest you and making them better.
    • Review merge requests for the wider web team, start setting quality standards for the work we produce.
    • Identify lapses in code quality or inefficiencies in development and deployment processes and drive initiatives to improve.
    • Gain a deeper understanding of the 1Password customer and work together with peers on solutions to help better serve them.
We have an international team that works on both sides of the Atlantic. So we try to work asynchronously where we can and ensure we have enough overlap each day. The beauty of this is that it works kind of like a flywheel: imagine submitting a PR and closing your laptop for the day. When you wake up, the PR is waiting for you and has been reviewed already!

We're looking for someone to join our team who works in the Eastern timezones of Canada or the United States, the United Kingdom, or the Netherlands. Early birds in more Western timezones of Canada and US are also welcome! As long as you are comfortable starting at 9am ET to have enough overlap with the team, we're happy to have you!
