The Fullstack Engineering Manager, Authentication and Authorization directly manages the engineering team responsible for foundational elements to keeping resources secure but accessible. Team consists of Frontend Engineers and Backend Engineer who work across many core components that are used by the rest of the GitLab team, which means you get exposure to and impact a lot of the GitLab products. The Engineering Manager's responsibility is primarily their team. They need to be familiar with GitLab's underlying technologies and processes to be able to support their team growth, as well as be the final decisive vote in cases where the team is blocked on a decision.

Their primary focus is building a world-class team (hiring and coaching), and putting them in the best position to succeed. They must also efficiently coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals.

About the Authentication and Authorization group

The Authentication and Authorization group is focused on building and supporting all use-cases related to authenticating and authorizing users and groups and providing them with access to important  resources. With such essential workflows and capabilities, it’s vital we provide a great user experience so we provide users with the tools they need to stay secure and scalable.

What we do is important for groups of any size, but especially so for large enterprises or companies operating in regulated environments. Things such as on-/offboarding employees should be automatable, and sensitive information should not be accessed by unauthorized users.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a combined team of engineers.
  • Help your engineers grow their skills and experience
  • Author project plans for epics
  • Run agile project management processes
  • Provide guidance and coaching to team members on technical contributions, product architecture, and other areas.
  • Maintain empathy for the team by keeping awareness of engineering processes and practices. Examples might be: evaluating individual workflow during one on ones, conducting code reviews, or working on non-critical path bugs and/or features.
  • Actively seek and hire globally-distributed talent
  • Conduct managerial interviews for candidates, and train the team to do technical interviews
  • Contribute to the sense of psychological safety on your team
  • Generate and implement process improvements
  • Hold regular 1:1s with all members of their team
  • Give regular and clear feedback around the individual's performance
  • Foster technical decision making on the team, but make final decisions when necessary
  • Draft quarterly OKRs and Engineering KPIs
  • Improve product quality, security, and performance
  • May have more than one specialty on their team, per our shared manager team concept
  • Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation to help ensure the availability goals for GitLab.com are met, by working with reliability engineers and development team members.

Requirements

  • Ability to use GitLab
  • Exquisite brokering skills: regularly achieve consensus amongst departments
  • 2 years or more experience in a leadership role with current technical experience
  • In-depth technical experience in at least one of the core languages, frameworks, or technologies used by your team
  • Familiarity with other functional areas of your team
  • Any additional experience required by the position's specialty
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Qualified candidates will be invited to schedule a 30 minute screening call with one of our Global Recruiters.
  • Next, candidates will be invited to a 60 minute interview with the Hiring Manager.
  • Candidates will then be invited to a 45 minute peer interview with another Engineering Manager
  • Candidates will then be invited to a 45 minute direct report interview
  • Candidates may then be invited to a 45 minute product manager interview
  • Candidates may then be invited to a 60 minute interview with a senior leader in the development department
  • Successful candidates will subsequently be made an offer

For Colorado residents: The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently $126,000.00 - $229,500.00 for Colorado residents only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary. Disclosure as required by the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, C.R.S. § 8-5-101 et seq.
