About the role

We are looking for an experienced, creative, media-savvy individual to help craft and accelerate executive communications related to the Office of the President. The ideal candidate has a deep connection to the tech, consumer and entrepreneurship industry; they know what it means to be relevant and innovative in this rapidly evolving space and media landscape. This person is someone who can quickly tap into relevant trends, influencers, and media contacts. They must be inspired by entrepreneurship and make decisions to support and amplify our mission of making commerce better for everyone. 

Working closely with the Global Communications team (Corporate, Product, and Consumer comms) to expand and deepen our public reach, this role will report directly to the Office of the President and play an integral role in advancing the communications effort of this team.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience working with C-Suite executives in a rapidly growing and fast-paced company

  • Is a voracious consumer of content and media, with a penchant for identifying the new and next

  • Is innovative, with a pulse on experimental and new media (eg. podcast, broadcast, YouTube, substacks etc). 

  • Knows how to engage in media moments and product launches with an executive lens 

  • Is a proactive, action-oriented individual

  • Is creative and thinks outside of the box beyond what is traditional. You’re not afraid to take strategic risks and experiment with clearly targeted goals and/or learnings 

  • Enjoys collaboration with a fast-paced team

  • Is a strong, succinct writer  

  • Has strong opinions, loosely held

  • Has care for and understanding of the ​​Shopify brand 


  • Expand and secure ongoing coverage in nontraditional media and channels to further establish Shopify and the President as voices of authority in commerce and entrepreneurship

  • Build and maintain relationships with prominent content creators and influencers across podcasts, YouTube, social media, etc.

  • Develop media strategies to support various initiatives and projects related to the President; experiment with new formats and channels (e.g., Twitter Spaces) to drive storytelling opportunities

  • Prepare media briefings, announcements, talking points, speeches, thought leadership/bylines, and other collateral for opportunities

  • Explore adjacent lifestyle media opportunities as appropriate, relevant to leadership, entrepreneurship, management, etc.

  • Work cross-functionally across various internal teams including comms, brand, social, and others and collaborate with relevant external agency partners

  • Support general press duties including vetting and responding to inquiries

  • Have a pulse on what’s happening within tech and know how to navigate our storytelling efforts around commerce and as champions for entrepreneurs

  • Collaborate on thought leadership opportunities and narratives for the President of a leading global company


We are looking for someone who is energized by the intersection of entrepreneurship, commerce, and tech with a passion for media relations and storytelling. These below business needs are critical for the successful impact of this role:

  • Extensive experience in PR or communications with a track record of success in driving coverage across top-tier media North American outlets

  • Experience in tech (startups, enterprise, developer audiences); tapped into the industry

  • Experience working with execs and developing thought leadership platforms 

  • Creative storytelling chops, able to see opportunities where they may not be obvious

  • The ability to operate autonomously, able to get shit done with little supervision

  • A love for managing complex, fast-moving, and unexpected challenges with a positive attitude, high judgment, and professionalism

  • An entrepreneurial self-starter mentality; eager to identify and experiment with new approaches

  • A passion and hunger to succeed and the ability to excel in a constantly changing environment

  • Outstanding influencing skills; written and oral communication expertise

  • A love for storytelling in a simple, thoughtful, and dynamic manner

It’d be great if you had experience:

  • Shaping the image and profile an individual

  • As a business owner/deep ties to entrepreneurship

  • Working with high-level executives and/or influencers

  • Handling tech PR or communications at a tech company

  • Developing communications around events

  • Working at management level at an agency with tech clients experience
