Project Manager - Movement Strategy Process United States

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a limited term Project Manager for the Movement Strategy Process with experience in project management and evaluation who is comfortable with navigating high-volume information flows, multiple competing stakeholders, situational ambiguity and complexity. As the Project Manager you will be a member of the core team of the movement strategy process and will work closely with other members of the team, as well as movement stakeholders.

You will be responsible for coordinating and managing human and financial resources, coordinating activities within the strategy team, as well as strategy process related activities within the wider Wikimedia movement. You will be in charge of tracking progress against goals, deliverables and milestones, as well as managing timely status updates and reporting. You will be expected to ensure fluent work streams as well as managing the overall process budget.

This is an excellent opportunity to take a leading role in a global strategic process, including diverse collaborative local and regional communities, which in its complexity is challenging and demanding, but impactful and rewarding!

Please note: The role responsibilities may adapt over time, depending on the expertise and dynamics in the team as well as the changing conditions of the process.

Start immediately; estimated until 30 June 2019 (potentially extended until June 2020). This work is full time.

We’d like you to do these things:   

  • Coordinate and manage the core strategy team and ensure effective workflows as well as the core team’s ability to execute on priorities
  • Create clear and realistic timelines, track progress and help the team stick to the deadlines, always considering the dynamic and flexibility of the process
  • Break down big work packages and define action items for the team
  • Manage the budget, keep track of strategy process finances and report on spendings
  • Enforce information flows and decision-making structures within the core team
  • Identify blockers and other issues throughout the process and participate in design and application of remediation strategies, including inclusive retrospectives and clear documentation as necessary
  • With the Information Manager ensure that stakeholders are timely informed about the status of the strategy process, including regular reports
  • Support the creation of materials for milestone meetings and decision-making within the strategy process
  • Manage and lead the Project Assistant and ensure collaboration with the Thought and Process Facilitator as well as with the Information Manager

We’d like you to have these skills:

  • Minimum of 7 years professional experience in project management and evaluation; e.g. from larger processes, campaigns or events
  • Experience in managing personnel
  • Commitment to execution, operational excellence, and attention to detail
  • Comfort with navigating high-volume information flows, multiple stakeholders with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, situational ambiguity and complexity
  • Process management skills to manage a wide range of incoming requests and responsibilities
  • Have experience with setting up financial structures and controlling project finances
  • Be familiar or have experience with project management tools
  • Ability to excel in a fast-moving, global grassroots environment with diverse cultural and geographic contexts
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to travel and work across time zones and on weekends  
  • Ability to work with colleagues who do not have English as primary language
  • Comfort in English (written and spoken)
  • Ability to navigate in a highly transparent and collaborative working environment

And it would be even more awesome if you have this:

  • Experience in working with international organizations
  • Experience with working in non-profit sector
  • General understanding of the existing landscape of the Wikimedia movement
  • Experience with strategy, change or transformation processes
